The Walking Hellos, featuring ex–Babe the Blue Ox bassist-vocalist Rose Thomson, have a deep and diverse sound: Imagine the Minutemen’s outsider funk as filtered through quirky all-girl indie rock, with oblique lyrics that make you feel like you’re missing something (in a good way). Radio I-Ching teams drummer Dee Pop (of Bush Tetras) with saxist Andy Haas and guitarist-banjoist Don Fiorino. The band’s second CD, The Fire Still Burns, finds the trio exploring a skronkier direction, but sticking to its ethos of melding downtown jazz with gutsy soul and other rootsy sounds.
