Before it was a playground for the rich, Manhattan's farthest-west reaches were the stomping ground of young gay men creating art and looking for casual encounters. Check out images of large-scale works that dominated the piers in the ’70s and ’80s, as well as photos chronicling the pre-AIDS cruising scene that thrived on the waterfront.
