An icon of New York glamour (and old money) for more than 70 years, the Carlyle has attracted generations of famous guests—especially those who value fresh flowers (the hotel spends more than $300,000 a year on orchids and other exotic blossoms). Renovated in October 2003, this petite charmer is located on a posh street on the Upper East Side. Rooms in the landmark Art Deco building feature marble baths, Scandinavian down comforters and, in suites, wood-burning fireplaces. The garden suite has two private terraces and a manicured flower bed. The Post House and Pembroke Room are the hotel's two white-tablecloth dining options. The Manhattan suite (where Madonna once lived) is an ode to the city, outfitted with NYC-themed books, photographs, CDs and DVDs.

Bono and other music-industry figures are said to be frequent guests of this toned-down sibling of the Mandarin Oriental. Potted palms and arched mirrors line the entryway, and the small marble lobby, appointed with 18-century Piranesi prints and Veuve Clicquot magnums, is usually swarming with mature international guests and white-gloved bellmen. After the first phase of a $10 million renovation, Donald Trump's glass-and-steel skyscraper towers are more sparkling than the display cases at Tiffany's. The Melrose Hotel

From 1927 to 1981, the former Barbizon Hotel was an exclusive women's-only hotel, host to the likes of Grace Kelly and Liza Minnelli. In 2002, the building reopened as the Melrose, spiffed up with cherry-wood furniture and gilded mirrors, and with the original marble floor restored. Tower suites boast landscaped balconies with Corinthian pillars and fab views of the city lights. The Library Bar features smart cocktails and a full menu.

Built in 1907 and renowned for its baroque splendor, the Plaza Hotel is a neighbor to Fifth Avenue's most exclusive stores.
