An icon of New York glamour (and old money) for more than 70 years, the Carlyle has attracted generations of famous guests—especially those who value fresh flowers (the hotel spends more than $300,000 a year on orchids and other exotic blossoms). Artwork by Matisse and Picasso hangs in the lobby, and the famous Bemelmans Bar is lined with hand-painted murals by artist Ludwig Bemelmans, creator of the Madeline children's books. Accommodations are decorated with plush fabrics and stocked with Kiehl's products. Café Carlyle has been the roost of cabaret singer Bobby Short for more than three decades. Children can explore the area with Madeline's Guide to the Upper East Side.
