Winter in New York City

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows
We liked the first one better than you'd expect—any opportunity for Robert Downey Jr. to be verbal and arrogant is welcome. The sequel will finally introduce legendary villain Moriarty (Mad Men's Jared Harris). (Dec 16)

The Adventures of Tintin
Steven Spielberg lets his imagination run wild with this 3-D motion-capture adaptation of the Belgian artist Herg's beloved comic series. It's breathless, witty and endlessly fun—a Spielberg crowd-pleaser par excellence. (Dec 21)

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
After Zodiac and The Social Network, the wizardly David Fincher has proven that he can do anything. But can he make these novels a little less boring—or at least better than the dozy Scandinavian films already produced from the trilogy? (Dec 21)

The Iron Lady
Is Meryl Streep going for Oscar gold or just channeling post-Baby Jane Bette Davis as British prime minister Margaret Thatcher? ("Cowardice!" she gleefully hisses in the trailer.) Whatever the case, consider us Streep-heads stoked. (Dec 30)

A Separation
An Iranian woman wants to file for divorce from her husband. From this modest premise, filmmaker Asghar Farhadi tackles complex issues of class, gender and the nature of truth itself—and the result is a modern masterpiece. (Dec 30)
