The Woman in the Fifth
Ethan Hawke is an American novelist trying to find his daughter in Paris; Kristin Scott Thomas is the mysterious titular character, a widow who enters his orbit. Ten bucks says that director Pawel Pawlikowski (My Summer of Love) has psychosexual shenanigans up his sleeve. (June 15)
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter
We knew we had forgotten some of that Gettysburg Address—the passages about wooden stakes through the heart, right? History sticklers can stay at home: This one’s a zany horror comedy with Scott Pilgrim vs. the World’s Mary Elizabeth Winstead supplying an Obama-tough First Lady. (June 22)
Brave
You can keep your Disney princesses; we’ll take the fiery-haired heroine of Pixar’s latest toon, a royal Scottish lass who’s a top-notch archer and must undo a witch’s curse to save her kingdom. Boardwalk Empire’s Kelly Macdonald brings the brogue. (June 22)
Seeking a Friend for the End of the World
Here comes the earth-killing asteroid once again, but instead of getting all Deep Impact about it, Steve Carell decides to hit the road with a neighbor (Keira Knightley), in search of his distant high-school sweetheart. The tone of the movie looks delightfully dark, sweet and unhinged all at once. (June 22)
To Rome with Love
Woody Allen jets off to Italy for his latest romantic comedy; he even costars as one of several American tourists in love. Hope springs eternal that this will be as strong as Midnight in Paris. (June 22)
