Marcello Mastroianni plays a film director who, after suffering a nervous breakdown, retreats to a resort clinic, where he unsuccessfully tries to pull his life, and his next film, together. Having suffered a similar breakdown himself after the success of La Dolce Vita, Fellini turned inward and came away with his most personal work: surreal, self-indulgent, demanding of multiple viewings, always rewarding.
