Kubrick’s lavish Thackeray adaptation is his most masterful film: a savage critique of human folly that’s as equally accomplished in its design as, say, A Clockwork Orange. It’s also his most heartbreaking picture, with a magnificent turn by Ryan O’Neal as the Irish social climber.
