Berlinger and Sinofsky’s first documentary isn’t quite as profound as their follow-up, Paradise Lost, but few films are. It’s still a remarkable portrait of a bizarre community, in which the ostensible story—the murder trial of an elderly backwoods farmer accused of killing his brother—is merely a backdrop for all manner of intriguing sociological ruminations. The filmmakers will attend the screening.
