At first, Abbas Kiarostami's Tuscany-set romance seems a simple tale of unrequited love between an English writer (William Shimmel) and an expatriate French art collector (Juliette Binoche). He meets her after a lecture; she drives them to a local village. They talk about their trade, most notably the associations between an original work of art and its copies. Then a waitress mistakes the duo for a married couple and the tenor of their relationship mysteriously changes, resulting in some mind-blowing narrative and emotional shifts. Kiarostami's latest invites comparisons to easily identified forebears (Resnais's Last Year at Marienbad and Rossellini's Voyage in Italy, among others), yet it never seems derivative. One thing is certain: The writer-director has graced us with a masterpiece.—Keith Uhlich
