Adapted from the last 80 pages of John Steinbeck’s histrionic 1952 biblical allegory, the movie bears the sweaty directorial imprint of Kazan, who brings his Method stylings to a tale that might have been better served by a more lyrically inclined filmmaker. But James Dean’s impulsive Cal still shocks.
