The Quays are unrivaled in the creation of dreamlike, self-contained, creepily atmospheric, profoundly mysterious worlds. A little of their hermetic beauty goes a pretty long way, however, and at feature length—as in this story of a young man trapped in an oppressive school for servants—the freakily evocative imagery ultimately becomes oppressive to behold.
