Fine, so Fellini’s decadence is no longer as decadent as it once was. All the better to notice Marcello Mastroianni’s brilliantly coiled self-loathing—one of the first truly modern performances—playing a glitz columnist who will never write that big novel, or stay faithful to his love or higher ambitions.
