Miyazaki's animated feature plunks a frightened, confused preadolescent girl, Chihiro, into a phantasmagoric netherworld. Crammed to bursting with indelibly grotesque characters, the film has few rivals as a work of visual imagination. For all his undeniable skill at the drawing board, however, Miyazaki isn't much of a storyteller.
