Soft-rock stare-down: ANIMAL KINGDOM
With the Academy Awards just around the corner, it's satisfying to see David Michd's modest Australian crime thriller remembered by critics groups; an Oscar nomination for Jacki Weaver's murderous mom isn't out of the question (perhaps resulting in a bad-parenting showdown with The Fighter's Melissa Leo). The entire film is excellent—atmospheric and unforgettable—but we must admit it scarred us most during an ironic, Tarantino-worthy appropriation of Air Supply's pillowy "All Out of Love," as violent Ben Mendelsohn burned a hole through the screen.—JR
