The Last Rites of Joe May

Actors like Dennis Farina (Get Shorty) fit a niche so perfectly—in this case, that of likable Chicago hard-ass—it's a delight when their hidden depths are tapped. Farina returns to his hometown to breathe intelligence into the role of a down-on-his-luck hustler, recently released from the hospital to find his options limited. Farina's performance isn't a comic one, requiring some adjusting on our part. But even though the script sometimes reaches for clichd pathos (rooftop pigeons should be retired as a plot device), Farina is always commanding.—JR (Clearview Chelsea; Apr 22 at 6pm; Apr 23 at 5:30pm; Apr 26, 29 at 4pm)
