FOREIGN PARTS
Travel up to the Willets Point area of Queens, right by the freshly christened Citi Field, and you'll find blocks of junkyards, auto-body shops and decrepit storefronts. You'll also find ground zero for the fight over commercial rezoning, as residents and business owners stare down the incoming threat of malls and condos. Verena Paravel and J.P. Sniadecki's documentary covers a lot of the same ground (literally) as Ramin Bahrani's Chop Shop, but this film opts for a bigger class struggle between midtown fat cats and the outer-borough denizens that call this desolation row home. The longer you watch these locals stumble and hustle, the more you mourn this broken-down neighborhood's inevitable demise.—David Fear
