TUESDAY, AFTER CHRISTMAS
The streak of great Romanian films continues with cowriter-director Radu Muntean's deeply affecting look at a disintegrating marriage. Real-life husband and wife Mimi Branescu and Mirela Oprisor play the drifting couple, whose relationship unravels due to an affair. This is a highlight of the fest's off-the-beaten-path offerings, shot in mesmerizing, unsettlingly quiet long takes and brilliantly performed. The tension builds slowly and deliberately, until the gasp-inducing sequence in which Branescu offhandedly confesses his liaison—it feels like a bomb has gone off.—Keith Uhlich
