UNCLE BOONMEE WHO CAN RECALL HIS PAST LIVES
Moonlight and crickets accompany almost every frame of this eerie, breathtaking jungle fantasia, also a delicate treatise on reincarnation, from Thai filmmaker and NYFF favorite Apichatpong Weerasethakul (Tropical Malady). "I had long forgotten the old world," says a bizarre, Chewbacca-like creature sitting at our titular hero's kitchen table. After ten minutes, you'll have forgotten it too. It must be said that "Joe" Weerasethakul's last feature, the metaphysical stunner Syndromes and a Century (2006), makes this one seem slightly less than astounding. But there's no better intro to the man's work.—Joshua Rothkopf
