Perhaps the greatest Indian film not directed by Satyajit Ray, Renoir’s small masterpiece of naturalism should under no circumstances be confused with that saving-the-farm picture starring Mel Gibson and Sissy Spacek. Nor with the Bruce Springsteen album, for that matter.
