The Robber

Fresh out of prison, running enthusiast Johann (Revanche's Andreas Lust) trains for a postfreedom marathon. When he's not building up his stamina, our stoic protagonist indulges in his other favorite pastime: ripping off banks. To look for the whys in director Benjamin Heisenberg's portrait of a monastic, mondo-disciplined outlaw is to miss the point; this isn't a psychological breakdown so much as a cool, Bressonian case study. Replicating its main character's run-rob-rinse-repeat routines, the film turns a sharklike pace into existential philosophy: Keep moving or perish. It wisely chooses the former. Sprint, don't walk, to catch it.—David Fear
