We Are What We Are

Why program mediocre Hollywood titles when they can program mediocre foreign ones instead? This is the kind of black thought you'll have while watching Jorge Michel Grau's underlit, underwhelming cannibalism thriller about a poor Mexico City clan committed to its "rite" despite the loss of its patriarch. Neck-burrowing chow-downs never take on a larger socioeconomic dimension; a corrupt-cop subplot could have come from any script. Sexed up with some incestuous tensions and a closeted sibling, the domestic dynamic remains only intermittently interesting.—Joshua Rothkopf
