St. Mark School, 2606 E 19th St at Ave Z, Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn (718-332-9304) "Low and slow" may be the motto of Southern pit masters, but the Yanks behind this ninth annual Brooklyn BBQ fest are doing meat their way—quick-seared and medium-rare. Teams (including local 'cue champs Three Men & a Baby Back and Hill Country vet Pete Daversa’s Deckie-Q) fire up the grills for the chance to win the New England Barbecue Society’s Team of the Year award, and to secure a spot at the World Food Championship in Vegas. While judges pick finalists in the chicken wing, pork rib and Chef’s Choice categories, barbecue fans can enjoy pay-as-you-eat ribs—$8 gets you two bones and a side of homemade pickles—from sponsor Fletcher’s Brooklyn Barbecue, as well as Brooklyn Brewery beers. If your carnivorous self still isn’t sated, fork over $10 to sample meaty bowls from the People's Choice Chili Smackdown and vote for your favorite. Beef buffs can also enter a raffle to win a one-on-one meat-smoking class with Fletcher's Matt Fisher. A portion of fest proceeds will benefit St. Mark School in Sandy-affected Sheepshead Bay.
