Devachan Salon and Departures LoungeSpa

Devachan Salon and Departures LoungeSpa

  • Price band: 4/4

Ask any curly-headed female in the city where she goes for hair care and she'll most likely name this Soho spot. That's because co-owners Lorraine Massey and Denis DaSilva, along with their expert staff, are leading the curly-hair-acceptance movement—and doing it without shampoo or a blow dryer. Stylists use a specific cutting method that nurtures and encourages natural curls, and finish with Devachans's own sulfate-free curl products. They say that the sulfates in shampoo dry and frizzify locks, so their concoctions use botanicals to cleanse and hydrate hair. Cuts start at $95 and products are available for purchase in store and online. • 212-274-8686, devachansalon.com

Ouidad Salon

  • Price band: 4/4

Carving and slicing may be two things you do to a Thanksgiving turkey but they're also Ouidad's patented techniques for dealing with curly locks. Owner Ouidad (also known as the Queen of Curl) has more than 30 years of professional experience and curls of her own, so she understands the characteristics and science of curly hair—and makes sure her staff does too. Cuts with the Queen are $250, but an appointment with a third-tier stylist is just $125. For super-dry 'dos, try damage control ($160) or deep treatments ($90). The salon also hawks a line of specifically formulated products for delicate hair in the store and online. • 212-888-3288; ouidad.com

Christo Fifth Avenue

  • Price band: 4/4

Christo needs no last name: The singule-monikered stylist has been a legend in curls long before his salon and Curlisto botanical product line launched in 2002. Meet with Christo (known as the King of Curls, though he has no relation to Ouidad!) for a consultation ($100), during which he'll help you develop a game plan and decide which style best suits you. Or jump right in and splurge on a cut with the King for $395; cuts with other stylists start at $95. Need inspiration? Check out their handy how-to-style videos for four different types of hair, which are available for free on their website [FOR FREE??]. And be sure to check for workshops with Christo who'll teach men and women how to manage and love their curls. • 212-997-8800, curlisto.com

Insitu Salon

Owner Paula Casano is a whiz with all types of hair including curly and wavy. But she's got six staffers on hand who are also specially trained to tame unruly tresses. Cuts start at $85 and include a soothing protein-enriched conditioner treatment (great rejuvenation for curls!) and brief hand- and neck-massages. Plus they're one of the few (possibly the only?) salons in the city to participate in the Locks of Love program. • 212-533-1130, insitusalon.com

Scott J

A TONY staffer with curls wound tighter than Dick Cheney has been loyal to this Upper East Side spot for years. "I took my curly-headed mother here once and now she insists on coming in from Boston to have her hair cut. It's the only place she trusts." Prices start at $45 and include shampoo and conditioning; scalp, neck and shoulder massages; your choice of a makeup touch-up or a hand treatment; and a complimentary bang trim between visits. • 212-496-3901, scottj.com
