Sally Hershberger Downtown

Sally Hershberger Downtown
Sally Hershberger is one of the most sought-after hairstylists in the country. Many a high-wattage star—Kate Moss, Julia Roberts and Michelle Pfeiffer, for example—will shell out $800 to see her, and Hershberger even attracts unlikely VIP clients like Tom Cruise and Hillary Clinton. If Hershberger's fee is too steep, consider shelling out for one of the other stellar stylists, Rebekah Forecast ($225), Ruben Colon ($175) or Ryan Trygstad ($225). It's a small price to pay for perfection. 425 W 14th St between Ninth and Tenth Aves (212-206-8700)

John Barrett Salon
Superstar stylist John Barrett's namesake salon has been featured as the backdrop to a chick-lit best-seller (Bergdorf Blondes), a Broadway musical, and many over-the-top fashion shoots. Located in the Bergdorf Goodman penthouse, the glamorous destination--with panoramic views of Central Park--naturally caters to those with disposable incomes. Cut and color (both starting at $120 each) are the salon's areas of expertise, but if you want the best, a cut-and-styling session with Barrett himself will set you back $500. 754 Fifth Ave between 57th and 58th Sts, ninth floor (212-753-7300, johnbarrett.com)

Frdric Fekkai
Celebrity stylist Frdric Fekkai's New York flagship is the premier place for exceptional cut and color jobs, performed by a bevy of talented professionals. L'atelier is a private VIP area, which offers the same services as the general salon. Patrons flock here for sleek, modern cuts (from $125) and blowouts (from $65, or a series of six starting at $350). Also on the menu: waxing, manicures and pedicures, makeup application, facials, massages and more. 712 Fifth Ave between 55th and 56th Sts (212-753-9500, fekkai.com)

Cristiano Cora Studio
Cristiano Cora started his affair with hair as a child in Venice where he learned from his mother, a talented stylist. After 20 years of working at Vidal Sassoon in London, Los Angeles and New York, and finally becoming creative director of the company—he assembled the most talented group of haircutters, colorists and hair-care experts he could find to open his dream salon. The sleek minimalist studio is lined with mod Italian leather chairs and stocked exclusively with the beauty brand Davines, which was chosen for its sophisticated balance of nature and science, and ethics and aesthetics. Luxe hair treatments from the line include a nourishing formula for dry scalps, rebalancing agent for oil control and purifying serums for dandruff ($50 to $150). Treat yourself to a cut with Cora himself ($300), or one of his talented stylists (from $100). 3 W 13th St at Fifth Ave, second floor (212-414-1333; cristianocora.com)

Salon AKS
This clean-lined, spacious salon—perched above the hyperbustling Fifth Avenue—is equipped with waxing rooms (bikini wax, $40 to $50) and Deborah Lippman--endorsed nail centers (manicures start at $28), and attract a perennially well-heeled clientele. Cuts are excellent ($100 to $250), speedy blowouts are red-carpet-worthy ($65 to $85), and they turn out appealingly natural-looking color jobs (single application starts at $90) and makeup applications (from $100). 689 Fifth Ave at 54th St, tenth floor (212-888-0707, salonaks.com)
