Whistle

Soon Beauty Lab

This orange-and-pink hair laboratory has its process down to a science: In-between trims are available on the 45-minute mark of each hour and include bangs and the fringe that frames your face. “These appointments are meant to maintain the haircut that you already have,” explains a gal at the front desk. For just $15 we wouldn’t expect anything more. Full cuts cost $50–$80 and perms (one of their most popular treatments) start at $100. • 212-260-4423, soonbeautylab.com

Whistle

Whistle’s motto, “Look less ugly,” certainly seems promising. The salon doesn’t offer much—haircuts (from $50 to $70) and colorings (start at $70) are the only items on the menu—but its hairdressers execute the limited services extremely well. Stylist Tom is known for turning bang-haters into side-swept goddesses—and he actually explains how to re-create the look after washing it at home. Bang trims are free for clients (as often as necessary) and just $10–$15 for new patrons. • 212-477-0631, whistlesalon.com

Fringe

Owner Amy Schiappa really likes art: Her beauty parlor has an art gallery, which features the work of local artists on a revolving basis, and the shop’s website thanks customers for “letting us put art on your heads.” Cuts start at $75 ($65 for men) and the stylists’ areas of expertise ranges from the unexpected and bizarre to the subdued and traditional. For returning customers, bang trims between regular visits are complimentary, and they’re just $20 for first-time clients. • 212-674-8383, fringeny.com

Medusa Salon

Though the mythical creature this shop is named after might have sported snakes instead of hair, this funky atelier can tame your wild tresses. There are 11 coiffeurs on hand, ready for blowouts ($35 and up), cuts (start at $45), color (from $60) and more. And bang trims for returning clients are free, while new clients pay $10. • 718-965-3999, medusasalonny.com

Mousey Brown Salon

Williamsburg is a haven for hipsters, as is this circa-1997 beauty shop. Unlike many of the city’s salons, Mousey Browns doesn’t use assistants, apprentices or beginners, ensuring that each cut is quality. The ’40s-era music playing in the background sets the tone for the four stylists’ specialty—classic, retro cuts—but they’re also whizzes at creating modern and glam styles. The staff is strongly anti-blow-drying and -flat-ironing and will teach you how to love the natural curls and waves of your hair. Cuts with shampoo and basic drying are $55, highlights start at $65 and bang trims are $15. Appointments are strongly encouraged. • 718-486-7971, mouseybrownsalon.com
