Each year witnesses a few additions to the pool of nurseries, and while these newbies never remain undiscovered for long, they often harbor refreshing attitudes toward admission. Blue Man Creativity Center
Geared to letting kids be, well, kids, this new, alternative nursery program focuses on helping two-, three- and four-year-olds feel safe, joyful, creative, inspired and connected with their peers, teachers and family. Founded by the folks behind the exuberant performance troupe Blue Man Group, the center plans to debut a kindergarten next year and is currently accepting applications for its premier class of five-year-olds. The British International School of New York
Gramercy’s year-old grade school, the only one in New York to adhere to the British National and International Baccalaureate curricula, added a nursery counterpart in September. Tots don maroon uniforms, learn French, play “football” and are instructed by a faculty of veritable Mary Poppinses, give or take a few men. The school’s rolling admission policy means that students (75 percent of whom have international backgrounds) can apply at any time of year. Montessori School of Manhattan
At the popular Tribeca preschool, each child’s day is determined by his own interests and whims. The waiting list is long at the cheery toddler house/kindergarten, but the new location on Gold Street (which opened in September) is still accepting applicants year-round. Smarter Toddler Nursery and Preschool
The Upper West Side school known for its movement-and-arts-centric program fills 20 seats each September after wading through nearly 200 applications. But this year, 95 to 100 spots are up for grabs at the Hell’s Kitchen location, due to open in January. Kids ages three months to five years will be admitted on a first-come, first-served basis, with efforts made to balance gender and age in each class.
