    NYC’s day-care crisis: Referral resources

    By Michelle Hainer

    Child Care, Inc.
    (212-929-4999, childcareinc.org)
The basic service here will provide you with a list of specific referrals based on location, income level and child’s age. Also, the website has helpful definitions of various types of care. Enhanced referrals offer ongoing counseling and tools to help with evaluating providers, including finding child care for emergency situations.
Cost: Basic service is free; enhanced referrals cost $65 for members, $75 for nonmembers.

Day Care Council of New York
    (212-206-7818, dccnyinc.org)
Speak to a parent counselor or submit an online form to the group’s Child Care Resource & Referral Services Program to receive a referral to center-based child care, family day care, programs for special-needs children, before- and after-school programs and summer camps.
    Cost: Referrals are free.

The Committee for Hispanic Children and Families
    (212-206-1090, chcfinc.org/ccrr/ccrr.htm)
This bilingual service, open to all, assists with locating child care near home, school or work as well as securing financial assistance. The website offers tips for making the best child-care choice.
    Cost: Cost: Referrals are free.

    In this issue:

      • The nanny and the au pair
      • 10 questions to ask a potential nanny or au pair
      • The day-care provider
      • 10 questions to ask a potential day-care provider
      • Help wanted: We have the answers to your burning child care questions.
    • NYC’s day-care crisis: In a city experiencing something of a baby boom, you’d think day-care centers would be popping up everywhere. And yet, working parents are still struggling to find care for their kids. Here’s why a slot in a center is harder to come by than a front table at the Waverly Inn.
      • Referral resources
    • O sitter, where art thou?: Mystery solved: Why there are so few affordable teen baby-sitters in New York City.
    • Do the right thing: How to put your nanny on the books in five (mostly) easy steps.
    • Break out: If you look hard enough (we did), you can find baby-sitting where you least expect it.
    • Caregiver portraits
    • The no-nanny diaries Two NYC parents share their own child care experiences.
