I attended a private school, and many people contributed a very nominal sum to the annual fund. It is by no means an obligation, either.

You've left out an important point. If your child is enrolled at an independent school, then the tuition you pay does not cover the cost of her education. You are obligated to include in your family's annual budget a contribution to the schools' annual fund, and it should be your no. one charitable giving priority.
