Kramer vs. Kramer (1979) In this Oscar-winning weepie, Manhattan homemaker Joanna (Meryl Streep) ditches family life—including husband Ted (Dustin Hoffman) and their son, Billy. The emotional weight is leavened by goofy father-son power struggles (the famous ice cream scene) and a bit of bedroom farce when the boy busts his dad having a sleepover. (Available on DVD.)
Kate & Allie (1984–89) After divorcing her philandering husband, Allie (Jane Curtin) and her son, Chip, and daughter, Jennie, move from Connecticut to Greenwich Village, where they shack up with her buddy Kate (Susan Saint James) and her daughter, Emma. In addition to awesome ’80s fashions, expect dating mishaps, trenchant discussion of gender roles and bickering over parenting styles. Try to not swoon over what the rent on their brownstone must have been back then. (Season one available on DVD.)
One Fine Day (1996) Divorcés Melanie Parker (Michelle Pfeiffer) and Jack Taylor (George Clooney) meet cute when their respective kids miss their school field trip. NYC is as important a character as either A-list celeb: The film races from the Brooklyn Bridge to Rockefeller Center to Serendipity 3. (Available on DVD.)
Ugly Betty (2006– ) Queens girl Hilda Suarez (Ana Ortiz), big sister to the title character, got knocked up at the prom a dozen years ago. The result? Her fabulous, show-tune-loving son, Justin. Bombshell Hilda redefines MILF for the new millennium, and she loves her son with an affection as large as her omnipresent door-knocker earrings. (Thursdays on ABC; season one available on DVD.)
