    Single Parent Guide

    Get it together

Check out the events and organizations below to connect with other parents who’ve been there.

Jewish Community Center The JCC hosts various events—open to members and nonmembers—for single parents and their children. Regular support-group meetings are held through GPAC: The Genesis Project for Single-Parent Families. 334 Amsterdam Ave between 75th and 76th Sts (212-399-2685, ext 219; jccnyc.org).

New York Single Parents Meetup Group Parents gather for socializing, mutual support—or just an excuse to get out of the house. At least one event is scheduled monthly; past outings have included family dance parties, museum visits and group playtime in Central Park. (singleparents.meetup.com/411/t/wm1_mem3).

NYC Single Parent Hangouts Solo moms and dads in their thirties and forties with young children meet up at low-key, casual events. (For more information, e-mail singleparentevents2@gmail.com).

Parents Without Partners Founded in Greenwich Village in 1957, this national organization sponsors meetings, social events and educational programs for single parents and their children. (800-637-7974, parentswithoutpartners.org).

SinglemomsNYC The Queens-based group draws single mothers who want to network and share tips and ideas. Daily and weekly online chats address relevant topics (newly single, pregnancy, raising teenage daughters), and support-group meetings are held twice a month. (yahoo.com/group/singlemomsnyc).

Single Mothers by Choice This network supports SMCs, defined on the organization’s website as “a woman who decided to have or adopt a child, knowing she would be her child’s sole parent, at least at the outset.” (212-988-0993, singlemothersbychoice.com).

Single Parent Resource Center The center advocates for improvements in policies and practices affecting single parents, and helps develop programs to fill their needs. 228 E 45th St between Second and Third Aves (212-951-7030, singleparentusa.com).

YMCA Many branches of the Y offer meetings and activities for solo parents, as well as special membership rates for single-parent-headed households. Moms meet every other Thursday at the McBurney YMCA (125 W 14th St between Fifth and Sixth Aves; 212-912-2300, ymca.org).
