After turning heads Off Broadway last season, In the Heights, a New York–centric musical à la West Side Story and Rent, makes its way to Broadway this month. Narrated by bodega owner Usnavi (played by the show’s composer, Lin-Manuel Miranda), and backed by a hip-hop and salsa score, Heights follows three generations of a tight-knit Latino community living in Washington Heights.
While most of the cast members remain the same, some new songs and scenes have been added. “We brought out those elements of the story that people responded to Off Broadway, such as the comic characters,” says Quiara Hudes, who wrote the book. “We also explore more thoroughly the concept of trying to figure out who you are while still honoring where you came from. It’s a message that will resonate with kids of all ages.” Young city dwellers are sure to be wowed by the new set—a deeper stage allows for a more detailed look at the uptown ’hood’s landscape and the subway’s famous A train.
