Best burb for raising kids: Montclair, NJ
From their perch about a half hour outside the city, residents of Montclair get the best of both worlds: proximity to everything in New York plus all the benefits of the suburbs, like spacious yards, a sleepier pace and more for the money. It’s easy to fall in love with Montclair’s history-saturated architecture (the township comprises six historic districts) and local culture (such as the Montclair Art Museum and the Van Vleck House and Gardens). Parents can choose between several strong schools (both public and private) and head to local playgrounds if kids tire of their own backyard.
