Entertain your kids when you're out of energy

Take it easy with these 19 activities your kids will love—at home or around the city.

By Marisa Cohen, Photographs by Neil Beckerman

Take a cruise What do all those tourists clogging Pier 83 know that you don’t? Well, the Circle Line gets you a couple of hours of low-key bliss. Bring your own food and drink on board to avoid buying overpriced hot dogs and pretzels. Then let your little one marvel at the sights as you slowly wend your way around Manhattan or down to the Statue of Liberty and back. You can whip out your knitting or listen to the tour guides, who might surprise you with a tidbit or two you don’t already know. The two-hour “Semi-Circle Cruise” to Lady Liberty is $25 for adults, $14 for kids (circleline42.com). Of course, you can always ride the Staten Island Ferry for free.

Get some culture Okay, you have to be on your feet for this one, but it’s still relaxing to wander through the galleries at the Museum of Modern Art, contemplating the Lichtensteins and Warhols. It’s even more relaxing if someone else holds your kids’ attention. Show up at the museum by 10am on a Saturday or Sunday, and you can snag four free tickets to the Ford Family Programs. In Tours for Fours, A Closer Look for Kids (ages 5 through 10) and Tours for Tweens (11- to 14-year-olds), museum educators lead the kids on age-appropriate treks and keep them inspired and busy with art projects (11 W 53rd St between Fifth and Sixth Aves; 212-708-9400, moma.org. Visit website for schedules).

Reach nirvana Jonesing for a fix of peace and rejuvenation? Take your brood over to the Shambhala Meditation Center of New York (118 W 22nd St between Sixth and Seventh Aves; 212-675-6544, ny.shambhala.org) for its monthly Sunday morning children’s program. Little Buddhas will spend 90 minutes making peace flags, learning about tea ceremonies, practicing calligraphy and exploring other mindful activities. Parents of the non-potty-trained crowd are asked to participate; if your kids can handle themselves, you are free to Zen out in the meditation room or take a meditation lesson. After class, everyone gathers for a potluck lunch ($20 suggested donation).
