    Expectant mom’s guide

    Shopping for two

There’s no denying that having a baby changes everything—including the way you shop. Suddenly you’re spending your time hunting for goodies you never needed before (sippy cups, expandable maternity pants) and craving items you never knew you’d want (a $300 midcentury-modern bouncy seat). Here’s where to save and splurge on it all.

    Gap Maternity
Head over to the megachain’s flagship in Herald Square (or shop online) for comfy tees and jeans that come in four different belly types to suit your taste and your trimester. Choose from under-belly waists or old-fashioned stretchy-panel styles. The store is the ideal spot to pick up classic and comfy capris, jeans and bootleg pants, especially if you catch them on sale. 60 W 34th St at Broadway (212-760-1268, gap.com)

    H&M Mama
Push your way past the throngs of stick-thin high-schoolers fighting over the latest Rihanna-designed tops, and you’ll find a surprisingly wearable line of maternity clothes, from T-shirts to work clothes (the Mama line is available only at the Herald Square store and online). Prices are as low as you’d expect from this cathedral of disposable trends, and you’ll be tempted to pick up a few of its adorable bodysuits for your little belly buster on your way out the door. 1328 Broadway at 34th St (646-473-1165, hm.com/us)

    Liz Lange at Target
We know what you’re thinking. What is fashionista-favorite Liz Lange doing in the “save” section? The former Vogue editor has shut down her high-end maternity store on Madison Ave until spring 2009, but you can still find her chichi tops, jeans, wrap dresses and tunics at Target—each for under $20. Target also has her “fourth-trimester” line, for when you can’t stand the thought of big-belly jeans but can’t quite zip up your prebaby clothes yet. Insider tip: Chat up a salesperson in the department and slip her your number. Ask her to give you a call when new shipments arrive—so you don’t have to deal with already-picked-through merchandise. Maternity locations in Brooklyn’s Atlantic Center; Elmhurst, Queens; the Bronx; and Staten Island. For more information, go to target.com.

    Old Navy
Some maternity clothes are so pricey, you’d have to pump out four kids to make them worthwhile. With Old Navy’s inexpensive, trendy styles, you won’t mind wearing the fashions a couple of times and then giving them to Goodwill. This season, look for cute kimono tops, hoodie tunics and “tankini” swimsuits for those prenatal swim classes.Maternity locations in Chelsea, Herald Square and Brooklyn’s Atlantic Center. For more information, go to oldnavy.com.

    Splurge

    Belly Dance
This West Village shop carries top-rung, celeb-worthy maternity couture, including Juicy, Michael Stars, Serfontaine, Olian and the house brand, Nom by Belly Dance. For some election-year fun, Belly Dance has created maternity tank tops featuring mom-and-baby donkeys or elephants (as it’s in the Village, we can’t imagine the store will be selling many of those elephants), as well as a barack-o baby design. 548 Hudson St between Charles and Perry Sts (212-645-3640, bellydancematernity.com)

    Boing Boing
Once you’ve packed the maternity fashions away, you’ll need special nursing clothes because, well, you can’t exactly nurse on demand if you have to unfasten dozens of tiny buttons. At this Park Slope shop, which specializes in nursing gear, you can purchase or rent a pump, get fitted for a nursing bra and buy stylish, easy-access clothes from Glamourmom, Japanese Weekend, Joli, Majamas and, yes, a label called Boobs. Lactation consultant and owner Karen Paperno hosts a nursing support group on Wednesdays at 10am. 204 Sixth Ave at Union St, Park Slope, Brooklyn (718-398-0251)

    Bump
Less than a year old, this Park Slope spot is known for its monthly “mocktail” parties as well as for carrying maternity-specific brands, such as Paige Premium Denim. The owner also hand-picks non-maternity fashion lines, like Sophia Costas, that have enough give to work with burgeoning tummies. An extensive selection of baby gear—slings and nursing supplies—rounds out the shop. 464 Bergen St between Fifth and Sixth Aves, Park Slope, Brooklyn (718-638-1960, bumpbrooklyn.com)

    Cadeau
It’s all about beautiful, comfy dresses at this Soho boutique, which recently became part of the BabyStyle empire—the high-end maternity and kids’ clothing website and shop. This spring, look for colorful prints, jersey wrap dresses that can be dressed up or down, hot-mama jeans and evening wear that won’t make you feel like a frumpy stepsister standing on the sidelines at the ball. 254 Elizabeth St between E Houston and Prince Sts (212-994-1801, cadeaumaternity.com)

    Destination Maternity
You’ll love the one-stop shopping at this maternity megaplex, where you can enjoy a facial at Edamame Spa and then get fitted for a nursing bra. Build your nine-month wardrobe at A Pea in the Pod (for designer clothes from 7 for All Mankind and Lilly Pulitzer), Mimi Maternity (midrange dresses and suits) and Motherhood Maternity (inexpensive, sportier styles). When you’re done, gaze wistfully down the block and remember, in just a few months you can go back to Barneys and Bendel. 28 E 57th between Madison and Park Aves (212-588-0220, destinationmaternity.com)

    Veronique
One of the very first elite maternity boutiques in NYC, Veronique opened on Madison Avenue in 1984, when mamas-to-be were still stuck wearing tents with bows. Supermodels and starlets (Gwyneth, Liv) flock to the shop, which carries Chaiken, Cadeau, J Brand, Juicy, Vince and Generra Paige Denim. 1321 Madison Ave at 93rd St (212-831-7800, veroniquematernity.com)
