    Expectant mom’s guide

    Group dynamics

The first time you walk into a new-mom support meeting, you might look around at the motley gathering of bleary-eyed, spitup-covered women and think, Who are these people and what the hell am I doing here? But trust us, somewhere in that group there is a sympathetic friend who will save your sanity when your baby goes on a nursing strike at six months, and at least three of you will be comparing kindergarten-application strategies in 2012.

    14th Street Y
Whether you want to knit a pair of booties, work off the baby weight, sing “Wheels on the Bus” or swap stories about pumping breast milk in an office bathroom stall, there is a meeting going on somewhere along the vast corridors of the 14th Street Y to suit you. Kiki Shaffer, who has been leading groups there for more than a decade, ticks off a list of classes and drop-in programs that includes a postpartum depression support group, mommy-and-tot Pilates, baby massage, a knitting circle (both the knitting and the Pilates groups provide babysitters so you can actually complete a roll-up or a purl) and a special-needs group. “One of the best things about these gatherings is that you can meet moms who may be a little bit further along than you,” says Shaffer. “Just when you think your baby will never sleep through the night, you meet someone whose child is a month or two older, and you think, Ah, there really is hope!” 344 E 14th St between First and Second Aves (212-780-0800, 14streety.org)
