    Expectant mom’s guide

    Group dynamics

The first time you walk into a new-mom support meeting, you might look around at the motley gathering of bleary-eyed, spitup-covered women and think, Who are these people and what the hell am I doing here? But trust us, somewhere in that group there is a sympathetic friend who will save your sanity when your baby goes on a nursing strike at six months, and at least three of you will be comparing kindergarten-application strategies in 2012.

    Soho Parenting
Located in the same sleek downtown building as Bliss Spa, Soho Parenting provides high-end support for moms who want serious baby guidance—and who can afford the hefty fees (an eight-week new-moms program costs $560). “Our group is much more than just a new-mom drop-in,” says Lisa Spiegel, who cofounded the center with Jean Kunhardt 20 years ago. “We guide the discussions, rather than just facilitating them. In this crazy, pressure-filled world, we give moms clear-cut, no-nonsense perspective about what’s really important.” All of the group leaders have degrees in counseling, and after you graduate out of the new-moms’ meetings, you move into a moms-only group (babies are left home, presumably with the nanny), which costs $75 per 90-minute session and requires a three-month commitment. “We have had some groups last 10 or 15 years,” Spiegel says. “It becomes like your family.” Special groups are also available for dads and second-time moms. 568 Broadway at Prince St (212-334-3744, sohoparenting.com)
