May is Bike Month! Free clinics sponsored by the NYC Department of Parks & Recreation and the Department of Transportation began April 19 on Staten Island and will be held every Saturday in May at park locations in all five boroughs (for details, go to bikenewyork.org and check out “Upcoming Events”; you’ll need to preregister). To participate, kids must be at least five years old and must bring a helmet and an appropriately sized bike (see “Buying a bike”). For those unable to attend, the site has video instructions and a downloadable learn-to-ride guide.
On Saturday 10, Socrates Sculpture Park will present the first annual Long Island City Bike Parade, a free family event where kids can decorate and repair (with expert help) their bikes with repurposed materials before parading them around the park, flanked by circus performers. On Sunday 25, the Tour de Brooklyn, a 16-to-18-mile ride for all ages, gets started in Dumbo. And on Saturday 31, don’t miss Family Day on Governors Island; tote your bikes over on the free ferry and enjoy complimentary instructional sessions, a bike rodeo and, for the weary, pedicab rides.

THE EVENT ON 5/31 IS A GOOD LOOK....MOST PEOPLE NEVER GET A CHANCE TO GO TO GOVERNORS ISLAND...THE US GOVERMENT JUST RECENTLY SOLD IT TO NEW YORK FOR 1.00 AND THE CITY PLANS TO DEVELOP ITFOR PUBLIC USE ONLY...YOU SHOULD REALLY CONSIDER TAKING YOUR KIDS TO THAT.
