Rounding out the interactive exhibits is the museum’s collection of artifacts: Unlike at many institutions, visitors actually get to touch and maneuver some of these one-of-a-kind objects. They can swing Wayne Gretzky’s hockey stick and the bat Reggie Jackson used to score three home runs in a single game at the 1977 World Series, and handle an Olympic-grade shot put, javelin and hammer. “We’re giving them the opportunity to pick up these items and imagine themselves at Madison Square Garden or Yankee Stadium,” says Schwalb.
Other memorabilia are meant to be regarded rather than prodded. The original Heisman Trophy, a ball from the first Super Bowl, the diary that gold medalist Jesse Owens kept while at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, and the American flag that goaltender Jim Craig wrapped himself in after the U.S. hockey team’s 1980 surprise win against the Soviets are among the more than 600 items on display.
