Music for a Green Planet
Self-released, $13.
A batch of jazzy takes on stale kiddie standards, saxophonist Hayes Greenfield’s Music for a Green Planet features inventive arrangements of tunes like “Hush, Little Baby” and “This Little Light of Mine.” But don’t expect to sing along; new lyrics penned by Greenfield and environmental activist Margo Schepart transform songs into Save the Earth anthems like “Hush, Little Planet” and “This Little World of Ours.” The message is, of course, important, but at times it’s hard to shake that corny feeling. While some of the rewrites are clever, others are clunky (the “bring back” chorus to “My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean” turns into “Turbines, turbines, water can make them go round and round”). For older kids, the CD may serve to introduce a variety of jazz styles, including Cajun and ragtime, and spark conversation about the sorry state of the environment. But preschoolers—not to mention their parents—may find themselves pining for the un-PC originals.

I, Raven Snook, am NOT a self-proclaimed dominatrix. I am, however, a I self-proclaimed drag queen trapped in a woman's body. That said, I am also a mother to a preschooler, as well as a long-time professional arts critic. So that's how I came to review the CD. It's just my opinion of course, and I'm glad to hear you liked it better than I did. However, the only thing "mean-spirited" on this page is your comment.

What a mean-spirited review! And how did Raven Snook - self-proclaimed dominatrix drag queen - come to be reviewing children's music for Time Out Kids? She clearly doesn't get it. I love this CD and find it to be a welcome change from so much of the trash that dominates American popular culture today.
