Few of Dan Zanes’s fans would have guessed the mellow local darling had world domination on his agenda all along. Like his previous CDs for kids, the brand-new ¡Nueva York! features well-crafted songs and stellar collaborations. But this time, the album is sung entirely en español. His core audience may not notice the difference; even kids who don’t know a word of Spanish can still fake salsa moves while belting out the chorus to “El Pescador.” Time Out Kids recently caught up with Zanes as he was en route from a Boston gig to talk about why the time was right for ¡Nueva York!
Is it just coincidence that you’ve made a Spanish album and you used to be in the Del Fuegos?
The Del Fuegos used to go to Spain all the time, since we had a lot of fans there. Every time I’d go, it was tough because I couldn’t communicate with all of these great people. I’d be like, “Man, I’ve got to learn Spanish.” Then we’d get back home and the idea would fade. But I kept feeling like I was missing out on something.
Lately, I feel like the U.S. has changed so much; people think badly of immigration. But it’s obvious you won’t have any fun in America if you only speak English.
