Brooklyn’s future—embodied in the massive Atlantic Yards project—is just a block away, but walk into the Old Brooklyn Parlor and you’ll be transported back to the borough’s Neil Simon–esque past. Take a seat on one of the spinning stools at the counter, or on a bench if you’re with an unsteady toddler, and introduce your tot to classics like egg creams, lime cherry rickeys, malted milk shakes and purple cows (egg creams splashed with grape-flavored syrup), about $3 each and served in tall soda-shop glasses. Original concoctions, like limeade with tons of fresh mint, and fresh apple juice spiced with clove and cinnamon, sit out in punch-bowl-size serving jugs. Lunch fare is more 2008 than 1958—a crisp and buttery panino-style grilled cheese, a turkey sandwich with Swiss, avocado, bacon, jalapeño and pesto on focaccia, or a ham (or turkey) and cheese with strawberry slices. Other offerings include daily homemade soup (I tried the hearty tomato, a perfect complement to grilled cheese), muffins, croissants, java from Park Slope’s Gorilla Coffee and old-school glass bottles of Coke. If the weather’s good, grab a treat on your way to Prospect Park—rainbow ice is nostalgically priced at $1 for the under-ten set ($2 for you), and a kids’ one-scoop ice cream cone will only set you back $2.50.
