Dining at Sakae Sushi, midtown’s new Japanese-by-way-of-Singapore joint, isn’t as much about the food as it is about the experience. After they slide into one of the cozy booths, hungry kids don’t have to wait for anyone to take their order. Conveyor belts (97 feet of ’em!) wind around the tables, so guests can pick and choose from ready-made dishes; each plate’s color indicates its price. More than three quarters of what comes around—everything from edamame to tempura cheese rolls—is cooked, so there’s plenty for tots to try. They can also show off their tech skills by ordering from the computer placed at each table. Within minutes of clicking on our selections, we were chowing down on miso soup, chicken teriyaki and mixed vegetable tempura. The children’s menu offers combos of Japanese and American treats—think California rolls with french fries—each served in a cute–as–Hello Kitty plane, train or fire engine dish. DIY types can sign up for the eatery’s Saturday afternoon sushi-making classes for kids. Chopstick mastery not required.
