The Mt. Fuji–esque size of the title character in The Lonesome Puppy (Chronicle, $18; ages 3 and up) contributes to his solitude: “I was too big for anyone to notice me.” Renowned Japanese pop artist Yoshitomo Nara may have taken a cue from Clifford the Big Red Dog (as in Norman Birdwell’s story, a little girl eventually befriends the giant pup), but the flair for subtle expression is all his own. The first-time children’s-book author portrays the burgeoning friendship through increasingly surreal imagery so eloquent that the text eventually drops away, superfluous.
