    Picture books about making friends

Feeling lonely? Curl up with one of these sweet stories.

    By Pamela Brill

    © 2007 by Andi Green

Most children, at some point in their young lives, can relate to feeling lonely. It’s no secret that a good book can offer solace; here are three that address the melancholy topic in clever, comforting ways.

Though The Lonely Little Monster  by Andi Green (Monsters in My Head, $14.50; ages 5 and up) begins with a traditional “Once upon a time,” what follows is anything but pedestrian. Nola has never ventured beyond her remote desert home, and her heartsick isolation pervades the watercolor landscape, practically engulfing her. Ironically, Nola’s flood of tears reveals some new friends who were there all along—she had only to look beyond herself. To purchase The Lonely Little Monster, visit worrywoos.com.
