For a shop owned by a state-of-the-art animation studio, the Little Airplane General Store is surprisingly low-tech. Set in an historic building at the South Street Seaport—which also houses Little Airplane Productions, the company behind Nick Jr.’s preschool series Wonder Pets—the brick-walled, exposed-beamed retail nook focuses on retro-minded, AAA-battery-free goods. Old-fashioned favoriteslike Jacob’s ladders, Indian club juggling sticks and, naturally, model planes are arranged on toddler-height wooden benches and in rustic cupboards. Parents have their own playthings to pore over, including faux-antique nautical compasses and tea-stained maps. Also on display is a rotating array of original framed artwork by the studio’s own designers. Sign up for a behind-the-scenes tour of the production company, and your kids can tell the artists in person how much they like their work.
