    Time Out New York Kids / Issue 28 : Jan 15–Feb 15, 2008

    Spring awakening

Kid testers tell us how their winter gardens grow.

    By Julia Israel

    3. Sprout and Grow Window
Testers Sam, 6, Dumbo, Brooklyn; and Daniel, 6, Morganville, NJ
Objective The transparent plastic case adds a “behind the scenes” element to the setup, letting tots observe the roots as they develop.
Entertainment value Our kid testers loved fluffing the dehydrated soil with a fork and keeping the plants thriving with daily dousings, but the directions (which didn’t specify how many seeds to use) befuddled Sam and his mom.
Mess factor High. Small openings made it difficult to cram soil into the container: Daniel wedged a ton of dirt under his nails.
Sound bite Sam, to plants: “Grow and be crazy!”
    Grade B+
Educational Insights, $17; at edin.com. Ages 5 and up.
