Because the New York Stock Exchange has been closed to the public since 9/11, the museum also serves as a de facto visitors’ center for the market, offering videos of the Exchange floor, a Teaching Ticker (which shows the usual symbols, but also explains what each abbreviation, numeral and color means) and a low-level recording of the trading floor’s buzz that’s fitting background noise. The museum’s gift shop peddles NYSE caps, miniature bulls and bears, and the Stock Rush game.
The best investment for families, though, is found on the grand mezzanine that serves as the museum’s permanent exhibit space. Here, a cluster of kiosks screen video interviews with various entrepreneurs, such as JetBlue’s David Neeleman, Zipcar founder Robin Chase and maternity-wear designer Liz Lange. Their stories just might inspire your little Alex P. Keaton to embark on the road to riches.
