The 14th Street Y’s myriad summer programs give kids (from toddlers to tweens) plenty of options: Campers can study Japanese culture, join a sports team, row a boat, workshop their acting skills, try out Israeli dancing and more. The rooftop playground at the 14th Street Y has sprinklers to help everyone beat the heat after a day of fun activities and field trips. A new Country Day Camp at Staten Island’s Henry Kaufman Campground combines nature exploration with Jewish cultural activities. Country campers can choose from a list of extracurricular units that includes team sports, arts and crafts, gymnastics, theater and camping. Ages 17 months to 11 years.
Hofstra University Summer Camps

These popular academic-athletic camps cater to 1,200 children on an average day, drawing a mix of Long Island locals and summer-home kids whose parents prefer to tan child-free. Campers spend half the day in recreational activities and the other half participating in electives like 3-D game development, theater or science. Hofstra Sports Academy Camps are designed for athletic kids who want to focus exclusively on one sport, be it basketball, lacrosse or baseball, under the guidance of NCAA head coaches. The camps also offer door-to-door pick-up and drop-off service in Manhattan and Queens. Ages 5 to 18.

The NY Kids Club promises that no two days will be the same at this morning camp. The 2008 Summer Olympics is this year’s theme, treating little campers to imaginary journeys to China, Brazil and Egypt. Gymnastics, rock climbing and martial arts fit right in with the athletic focus, while artsy tykes can assemble craft projects, learn creative movement or practice their theater skills. Extended day care is available. Ages 2 ½ to 6.

With 21 programs ranging from one to six weeks, the 92nd Street Y boasts one of the most diverse camp catalogs around: gymnastics, musical theater, metalsmithing, filmmaking and sleepaway camps are just a few of the offerings on this year’s lineup. For travel-hungry teens, a four-week exchange program to Israel is on tap, and two camps cater to children with developmental disabilities. Transportation to most sites is available for an additional charge. Ages 3 to 18.
Oasis Summer Camps

Oasis Children’s Services, a community and school collaborative organization, runs dynamic camps all over New York City and Long Island every summer. For kids not ready to venture to outer boroughs, Oasis runs four camps in Manhattan alone, featuring art, sports and swimming. A camp just for five-year-olds gives youngsters an introduction to the Oasis experience. The group also offers a Teen Travel program that arranges daily field trips to beaches, parks and museums. Transportation to and from camp sitesis available for an additional charge. Ages 5 to 14.

Brooklyn’s Poly Prep Country Day School offers children performing-arts, academic, sports and computer science programs this year, along with a quintessential “Summer Experience” camp. The specialty camps are run by veteran staffers, and separate swimming lessons are available. Transportation can be arranged from Brooklyn and Manhattan locations for an additional charge. Kids enrolled in the Summer Experience Day Camp receive a 50 percent discount on the Summer Academic Program.
