Brooklyn Museum of Art Gallery/Studio Program
Jun 28–Aug 27. Brooklyn Museum of Art, 200 Eastern Pkwy at Washington Ave, Prospect Heights, Brooklyn (718-638-5000, brooklynmuseum.org). Subway: 2, 3 to Eastern Pkwy–Brooklyn Museum. $159–$175.
• Session I: Jul 2–30. Wed, Fri 10:30am–12:30pm or 1–3pm.
• Session II: Aug 1–27. Wed, Fri 10:30am–12:30pm or 1–3pm.
• Session III: Jun 28–Aug 23. Sat 10:30am–12:30pm or 1–3pm.
These classes are for young artists looking for instruction beyond finger painting. After checking out the museum’s collections and doing some sketching, students head into the studio to make art inspired by what they’ve observed. Classes in painting, sculpture, mask-making and comic art are small (15 campers or fewer) and are led by teaching artists. Courses are separated by age group. Ages 6 to 12.
Parsons Pre-College Academy
Aug 4–15. Two-week sessions. Mon–Fri 9am–4pm. Parsons College, 2 W 13th St at Fifth Ave (212-229-8925, parsons.edu). Subway: F, V to 14th St; L to Sixth Ave. $443–$898.
College might be the furthest thing from your fourth-grader’s mind, but in the competitive design world, it’s never too soon to teach kids the skills they could one day need to pay the bills. Parsons’s widely praised program for youth offers painting, game design, architecture, portfolio development, interior design and, of course, accessory and fashion design in two-week summer intensives. A half-day option is available for grade-schoolers who are looking to explore their creativity in a less-exhaustive setting. For kids in grades 4 through 12.
