Time Out Kids Summer Day Camp Guide

Find the best warm-weather havens for whatever your youngster is into.

    HISTORY

    Neighborhood History Camp
Jul 14–18 8:30am–3pm. Mount Vernon Hotel Museum & Garden, 421 E 61st St between First and York Aves (212-838-6878, mvhm.org). Subway: N, R, W to Lexington Ave–59th St; 4, 5, 6 to 59th St. Prices not available at press time.

The Mount Vernon Hotel Museum history camp includes nostalgic art projects and games, behind-the-scenes tours and field trips that allow tweens to become immersed in the lives of 19th-century New Yorkers. At week’s end, campers give their folks a tour of the museum and show off their own handmade “artifacts.” A discount is offered to those who register by May 1. Ages 9 to 12.

    MUSIC

Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls
Jul 7–11, Aug 18–22. Mon–Fri 9am–5:30pm. Urban Assembly School of Music and Art, 49 Flatbush Ave Extension between Manhattan Bridge and Concord St, Downtown Brooklyn, seventh and eighth floors (212-777-1323, williemaerockcamp.org). Subway: A, C, F to Jay St–Borough Hall. $50–500.

This nonprofit music camp gives girls the chance to jam out for one week during the summer. But this particular rock & roll lifestyle isn’t all about partying; by teaching lassies how to play musical instruments, write songs and perform together, the Willie Mae program promotes creativity and fosters confidence, self-esteem and tolerance. Plus, girls with guitars are totally badass. Ages 8 to 18.
